Storage Equipment Safety Service was founded on the 3rd August 1987 by Philip Pinel, as a professional and independent organisation to provide the unique service of racking and shelving safety inspections.

The Company has grown steadily and continues to expand throughout the UK, Europe, North America and the Caribbean with trained Safety Consultants providing a range of Safety Services to the Warehouse and Distribution Industry.

Our offices are fully equipped to provide the necessary support services in their respective countries.

SESS is a respected member of both the Storage Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (SEMA) and Fédération Européenne de la Manutention (FEM).  In addition we are members of the United Kingdom Warehousing Association (UKWA) and Materials Handling Institute of America (MHIA).  We also have individual membership of Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH).

Our Safety Consultants are SARI (SEMA Approved Rack Inspector) Registered.

In September 1990 we qualified for the quality standards formerly BS 5750 Part 2 now ISO 9001: 2008 Certificate No FS 10668 and in November 2000 we achieved the National Standard for Investors in People and were successfully re-assessed in September 2003, September 2006 and September 2009.

During 2006 and 2007 we became an accredited training centre for the CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health) and IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety and Health).

We are the only totally independent company covering the UK, Europe, Ireland, North America and the Caribbean providing this professional service.  Our clients range widely and include many blue chip companies.

Safety inspections are covered by legislation in the UK under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

In Ireland, Safety Inspections are covered by legislation under the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act 2005.

In the USA, Safety Inspections are covered by legislation under the Occupational Safety & Health Act 1970 – USA.

In Europe, Safety Inspections are covered by legislation under The European Framework Directive on Safety and Health at Work (Directive 89/391 EEC).

SESS is an autonomous Company which originally employed 2 members of staff and occupied a small rented office on the top floor of a building located on the outskirts of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.  Due to the success of the business the company has continued to grow and has re-located a further 3 times, the last move being to a detached 12,000 sq. ft. building which the company owns.  We have transformed the buildingto provide a modern and pleasant working environment for our staff with more space to accommodate our growing workforce together with a ‘state of the art’ training facility and a warehouse area utilised for practical training.

We have 33 members of staff based at Head Office and 21 Safety Consultants covering the UK and Ireland, 1 Licensed Safety Consultant covering Northern Europe and 1 Licensed Safety Consultant covering the Caribbean. The Company also employs a Chartered Structural Engineer and Chartered Safety & Health Practitioner. 

We are continuing to develop the European Mainland and North American markets.

In May 2007 SESS formed a collaboration agreement with the Freight Transport Association and also during 2007 a further collaboration was formed with RackCare to provide a system to aid our clients fully manage their repair programme.
